Electronics entrepreneur Dr Ian Eddison brought his business know-how to bear on helping Manchester University software spinout company Transitive Technology turn its technological excellence into commercial success.
The five-year old business has created and patented a novel translational software solution that allows software developed for one computer operating system to run on another system without any source code or binary changes.
The software enables Apple users, for example, to make use of Intel processor systems, a breakthrough that Dr. Eddison predicted will have “enormous impact on the computer industry.”
He identified Transitive as a company with real growth potential in 2003 and agreed with Jay Michlin, its General Manager in Manchester, a plan of action to demonstrate that “UK companies can profit from their technical ingenuity.”
While Jay and his team continued their leading edge product and customer development Eddison organised a ChamberLink management skills training programme for the Manchester team and completed a research study identifying key customers for Transitive.
The work had its rewards in 2004 when the company was named as the UK’s 18th fastest growing technology business in The Sunday Times/Microsoft Tech Track ratings. In 2005 the company achieved 2 international awards being named as runner-up in the software category of The Wall Street Journal’s annual Global Technology Innovation Awards and Manchester based founder and CTO Alasdair Rawsthorne was also named an InfoWorld Innovator.
It has since secured high profile volume customers in Silicon Graphics, a US-based leader in high performance computer products, IBM and Apple, which is switching from Motorola to Intel processors. In January 2006 Apple announced new iMac and MacBook Pro computers based on the Intel Core Duo processor and running Transitive based software Rosetta.
Transitive’s achievements are reflected in the growing strength of its Manchester workforce, which now numbers 80. “The region should be really proud of this company and what it is doing. All the knowledge underpinning its success is built around Manchester graduates, “ says Dr. Eddison
Following the success of this work Jay was able to return to California and Henry Nash arrived as the UK based General Manager.
